Characterization of overall ceramide species in human stratum corneum.
Ceramides (CERs) in human stratum corneum (SC) play physicochemical roles in determining barrier and water-holding functions of the skin, and specific species might be closely related to the regulation of keratinization, together with other CER-related lipids. Structures of those diverse CER species, however, have not been comprehensively revealed. The aim of this study was to characterize over...
متن کاملMechanical Properties of the Human Stratum Corneum: Hydration Effects on Graded Delamination of Human Stratum Corneum
Reinhold Dauskardt Stanford University, Professor Materials Sciences and Engineering The stratum corneum (SC) is the outermost layer of the skin. Its process of reneweal is regulated by various mechanisms, including chemical and structural gradients through the SC thickness. In this study, an in vitro mechanics approach for studying the delamination behavior of SC in the direction perpendicular...
متن کاملHuman stratum corneum lipids: characterization and regional variations.
The lipids of mammalian stratum corneum are known to be important regulators of skin permeability. Since the human stratum corneum displays remarkable regional variations in skin permeability, we assessed the total lipid concentration, the distribution of all major lipid species, and the fatty acid composition in Bligh-Dyer extracts from four skin sites (abdomen, leg, face, and sole) that are k...
متن کاملSorption properties of the human stratum corneum.
Water sorption is important for the overall structure and function of keratinized tissues such as the human epidermal stratum corneum (SC). In this study we report on a gravimetric method for studying sorption properties of human SC, both from heel and female breast skin. Changes in mass were measured as the relative humidity was altered in steps under controlled environmental conditions. The p...
متن کاملDesquamation in the stratum corneum.
To maintain a constant thickness of the stratum corneum the desquamation rate and the de novo production of corneocytes is delicately balanced. Using a plantar stratum corneum model we have obtained evidence that proteolysis is a central event in the desquamation process. A number of regulatory mechanisms for desquamation have been postulated based on our findings.
